Port of Oakland January 2024: Imports up 8.2%, exports rise 9.3%

The Port of Oakland continued its upward trend in container volume in January, which began in 2023.

In January 2024, full imports surged by 8.2%, with the Seaport processing 72,081 TEUs (twenty-foot containers), compared to 66,637 TEUs in January 2023.

“Imports benefitted from strong consumer demand, as well as the normal seasonal uptick each January prior to factories in Asia closing for the Lunar New Year,” stated Bryan Brandes, maritime director at Port of Oakland.

Full exports also experienced growth, rising by 9.3% as 62,596 TEUs moved through the Seaport in January 2024, up from 57,279 TEUs in January 2023.

Bryan Brandes further added, “The increase in export volume can be partially attributed to consumer demand in Asia remaining high for U.S. agricultural exports.”

However, empty imports dipped by 1.1%, with 17,117 TEUs passing through Port facilities in January 2024, down from 17,299 TEUs in January 2023. Similarly, empty exports declined by 24.5%, with the Seaport handling 28,694 TEUs in January 2024, compared to 38,014 TEUs in January 2023.
