In the first quarter of 2024, the container throughput of China ports was 76.7 million TEUs, representing a 10% year-on-year increase.
As expected, the Shanghai port has the lion’s share, handling 12.45 million TEUs, followed by the Ningbo-Zhoushan and Guangzhou ports with 9.14 million and 6.09 million TEUs, respectively.
The largest increases in container volumes were reported at the Beibu Gulf, Shenzhen, and Ningbo-Zhoushan ports, which achieved growth rates of 20.4%, 16.2%, and 11.7%, respectively.
Only one of the major Chinese box ports saw a year-on-year decline in the first three months of the year. The port of Xiamen, in particular, recorded 2.85 million TEUs in the first quarter of 2024, translating to a 1.8% decrease compared to the same period last year.
